Mar. 11, 18, & 25, Saturdays, 9:00AM - 4:00PM - 3 Day Workshop

Description: This class is for all levels, no experience working with glass required. Across 3 consecutive Saturdays, students will learn about the properties of glass, how to cut glass, how to plan a kiln schedule, and how to operate a kiln. Students will make a glass flower bowl, landscape, set of basic coasters, a cahichon pendant, and a soap dish.

This class is suitable for adults, seniors, and teens over 16 years of age. Materials and Tools information below. N95 Mask is recommended for safety.

For 3 consecutive Saturdays, students will be immersed in the world of glass fusing!

They will start with glass cutting lessons and learn about kilns.

Topics include the following:

  1. Glass cutting

  2. Kiln firing processes and fusible glass products

  3. Planning a kiln schedule and learning about operating a kiln

Students will complete  the following projects:

  • an 8"x8" landscape,

  • a 9"  full fused circle  embellished  with Frit Slurry and other decorative glass components  to be shaped (slumped) into a bowl shape or into the shape of a flower,

  • a set of 4 coasters,

  •  a soap dish

  • A few pieces of jewelry (for example, the student can create a set of 4 cabochons  and attach  bales  for necklaces, earrings and/or adjustable ring bases).

Projects will be fired off-site and will be available for pick up at the Sangre de Cristo classroom one week after the original class date.

Class starts at 9:00am and ends at 4:00pm, with a 1 hour lunch break.  Students can bring their own lunches to extend their time in the studio.  Students may also go out for lunch and are asked to return promptly one hour after the Instructor  breaks for lunch.

New projects will start promptly after lunch, so sometimes people enjoy having extra time during lunch to catch up if they are behind.

Students should provide their own-95 style mask, which will be used for a short time each day.  All other tools and materials will be provided by the Instructor and Sangre de Cristo Art Center.

MATERIALS & TOOLS:

Due to the nature of this class, at brief periods of time students may be working with glass powders. This being the case, we ask students to bring an N-95 mask for safety. This mask will be worn while handling the glass powders and isn’t required to be worn for the whole class. The studio will have a limited number of respirators available for class use, however, if you are able to bring a personal safety mask, this would be recommended. Other than personal safety masks, all materials and tools will be provided by the Instructor, Nell Trask, or by the Arts Center.

FIRING POLICY:

It takes hours to run the kiln and fire the pieces.  Because of limitations on access to a kiln, the projects will be fired and available for pick up at Sangre de Cristo Art Center one week following the conclusion of your class.

Parents/guardians are required to sign-in and sign-out students. Students will only be released to adults indicated in their registration. For unforeseen/last minute pick-up changes, please call 719-295-7200.

Students may be dropped off no more than 15 minutes before class and no later than 15 minutes after their last class.
