Omotesenke School of the Japanese Tea Ceremony

Joy's Tea Ceremony Name, given to her by her Tea Teacher in 1985 is Sojyu, meaning "fortunate one".
In this class, tea students will be instructed on how to do MIZU YA preparation. The basics of the Thin Tea Ceremony (Ousu Cha) will be demonstrated at every session. In the last thirty minutes of the Tea session, there will be practice in writing the calligraphy piece, ENSO (Completion), WA )Harmony), KOKORO (Heart, Spirit, Love), and OCHA (Tea).
Topics of Discussion: The 4 Principles of the Japanese Tea Ceremony:
- WA (Harmony)
- Kei (Respect)
- Kei (Purity)
- Jaku (Tranquility)
Philosophy of the Japanese Tea Ceremony:
- Ichigo Ichie (One Encounter, One Opportunity)
- "Make Tea with your heart, not your hand, make it without making it in the stillness of your mind."
- What is the sound of Cha no yu? Cha no yu sounds like the WIND IN THE PINE. (Matsu Kaze)
- "Never fail to learn from the pure voice of an ever flowing mountain stream splashing over the rocks"
Class Dates: June 1 & 29, July 6 & 27, August 3 & 31, September 7 & 28, and October 5 & 26.
Class is held in our 3rd Floor Boardroom, located in the Helen Thatcher White art galleries building.

Behavior
All participants are responsible for exhibiting respectful, kind behavior on campus. Participants will be held accountable for their behavior and any property damage. Inappropriate behavior from any participant will not be tolerated and may result in their removal from the studio without a refund. Examples of behavior that will result in removal from studio spaces include but are not limited to:
- Violating the Studio Rules
- Disregarding requests and/or safety instructions given by Studio Manager
- Climbing/ striking/ defacing the campus sculptures and interactive art pieces
- Use of inappropriate language while on campus
- Running/ screaming/ roughhousing while inside the museum
- Bringing drugs, alcohol, firearms/ weaponry, or toys that mimic their appearance
- Hitting/biting/causing harm to instructors, staff, or other participants in Arts Center programs
