Colored Clay: Wheel Throwing

In this 2-day workshop, participants will explore using different types and colors of clay for throwing on the wheel. Students will learn which clays are compatible, how to color clay with stains, and different ways to combine clays for throwing and carving techniques to bring out fascinating patterns. Students will have an opportunity to work hands-on to create a set of thrown colored clay pieces. Finishing pieces with glazing or polishing will be covered and available to students after the workshop dates. Some throwing experience necessary. Materials provided.

About Your Instructor:
Sarah Christensen is a Pueblo, CO based ceramic artist making functional thrown porcelain pottery and ceramic sculpture. Originally from Denver, she discovered a love of clay in high school. She pursued an education in ceramics, earning a BFA from Alfred University in 1999. She has worked continuously in clay, exploring a wide range of making and firing techniques. Focusing predominantly on functional pottery and decorative sculpture fired in soda kilns. Her love of a well crafted pot combined with a deep need to decorate everything in site in inviting colors and patterns has given her a loyal following of collectors across the state and beyond. She enjoys teaching as it enhances her understanding of the material, as well as being an honor getting to share in others' creative journeys.
