Curves & Angles

Diel Gray
May 2nd to August 9th
Regional Gallery

Diel Gray is not one to talk about himself much. He has on occasion posted on social media platforms, to give a glimpse into his processes, whether he is inventing new shapes, trying new glazes, or building a new studio, but it’s only a glimpse. The majority of his time is spent in actually doing the next project.

Gray works from Trinidad, Colorado where he built and wired his working studio from scratch. It houses work space for the creation of new forms and all the parts necessary to bring his finished products out into the world.  The lucky are invited in to the studio to see his work in its birthplace.

Gray’s work seems to speak of a balance between opposites. He writes about dark/light and geometric/organic, but these are distant words until one witnesses the visually seductive variety of forms and colors that Gray masterfully combines to create quixotic and sturdy pieces. They are difficult not to touch they are so appealing. Many of the forms have unique dimensions and each one is accentuated with a combination of colors born of years of experimentation. Both delicate to the eye and solid to the touch Gray’s pieces are a cherished part of discerning art collections.

“Primarily stoneware clay fired in an electric kiln, my work is a daily quest to find balance in contrast: dark/light, controlled/casual, geometric/organic.”
