Saddle Up: A Celebration of Southwestern Art exhibit features five well-known artists with a life-long passion in the southwestern landscape, culture, and colors. Below is more info for each artist and a link to their website.

Kim Mackey

K.L. (Kim) Mackey grew up in Pueblo, Colorado.

He attended public schools and, through his interest and ability in art, won a scholarship to attend the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver. Following art school, Mackey worked for several years as an illustrator, completing assignments for such clients as True West magazine, Western Horseman, and Capitol Records.

Special studies at Colorado State University qualified him as one of only a few certified police artists in the state, but recognition from his peers and collectors led him away from commercial work and illustration into full time fine art painting. Mackey also coaches students; he is a popular teacher, conducting workshops and classes throughout the region. He has been a faculty instructor at the Art Students League of Denver, and has taught at the Colorado Institute of Art.

Critics consider Mackey to be one of the best artists in the state of Colorado. He is known nationally for his western art.  His credentials list numerous awards, including the prestigious Winsor-Newton Award from the Oil Painters of America. He has exhibited at the Salmagundi Club in New York, the Oil Painters of America in Chicago, Illinois and San Antonio, Texas, the Colorado Governor’s Invitational Show in Loveland, the Coors Western Art Show in Denver, the C.M. Russell Auction, the American Art Invitational Show in Denver and at the Gilcrease Museum. He was also a regular participant in the Altermann Collectors auctions in Santa Fe and Scottsdale.

His paintings hang in many distinguished collections, including that of the singer/songwriter Neil Diamond. Mackey’s work is also included in the highly selective King Collection at the Sangre de Cristo Fine Art Center in Pueblo, Colorado.  Kim is also featured in the recently published book, "Painted Sky".

Mackey is one of only a few artists in the United States to be selected as a signature member of the Oil Painters of America, and has been featured in Art Revue, Art Talk, The Artist’s Magazine, Southwest Art, Art Of The West, Western Horseman and Cowboys And Indians magazine. The Denver Post has called him "a master of (his) genre," and Southwest Art has acknowledged him as a traditional cowboy artist in the finest sense of the word.

Amy Laugesen

“The Horse is an ancient muse inspiring artists across millennia to contemporary times. I stand on the shoulders of artists who long, long before me explored object making and painting to celebrate the spirit and form of the horse and to show reverence for the relevance of horses in their culture.

My off-grid home and studio are nestled on the shoulder of the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountains, overlooking the rugged San Luis Valley. Surrounded by expansive landscapes and the presence of horses and mules, I find inspiration in their forms. When creating my ceramic and mixed-media sculptures, I weave in my personal history and the rich equine heritage of the iconic American West.

With a nod toward ancient artifacts from civilizations around our world, my sculptures intentionally appear as relics, treasures to honor the profound, age-old human relationship with these magnificent creatures. My process of discovering the essence of a herd of horses (and sometimes a mule) within the mud and transforming this into contemporary ceramic artworks continues to captivate my artistic imagination.”

Nathan Solano

Nathan Solano’s relationship with art began at an early age. However, he didn’t begin a professional painting career until his 40s.

Solano was born in Utah and raised in Colorado — his father a coal miner and his mother from a family of coal miners and farmers. He attended the University of Colorado for a short time. Then, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve as an infantry sergeant in the Vietnam War.

Upon discharge, Solano briefly returned to school before entering the workforce in various trades. His artistic career began when he joined an advertising agency as an illustrator.

In Colorado and Florida, he has served as an illustrator, photographer and art director for a number of agencies.

Solano began his full-time painting career with his move to Colorado, where he currently resides.

Although Solano is widely known for his depiction of Cowboys and Native Americans, his portfolio contains a variety of subject matter. From dusty trails and crashing waves to a child holding her father’s hand, his work captures life — as art.

He appears regularly at nationally-recognized art shows and has been featured in Art of the West, Southwest Art, Western Art Collector, Cowboys and Indians, Western Horsemen, The American Cowboy, Taos Magazine, The Artist Magazine, and Wildlife Art Magazine.

Leon Loughridge

Raised in the open ranch land of Northern New Mexico, Leon Loughridge developed an early affinity for the Southwestern landscape. He was greatly influenced by his grandmother’s involvement in Northern New Mexico art circles and by his studies at the Colorado Institute of Art.

Stationed in Germany while in the army, he was able to travel extensively throughout Europe, visiting museums and filling journals with sketches. He studied painting techniques of the old masters for two years, finishing by copying a Franz Hals at the Stuttgart Stattsgalerie Art Museum. The museum’s collection of etchings held a special meaning for Leon.

On his return to Colorado, Leon studied intaglio techniques and began selling his prints in mountain galleries. In 1998, he purchased his first letterpress and received immediate success with the woodblock prints he produced. The subtle layering of color in the wood block process allows him to capture the atmospheric qualities of the Southwestern landscape.

Today, Leon Loughridge owns the Dry Creek Art Press publishing company, where he utilizes his printmaking skills to make reduction woodblocks, etchings and limited edition books, hand-printed on a 1920 Vandercook Flatbed Letterpress.

His work is exhibited nationally and collected by numerous museums including the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Public Library, and the Colorado History Museum. Loughridge was selected to be the featured artist for the 2005 Colorado Mountain Landscape Exhibition and Sale, and his work has been on display in the annual Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale since 2015.

Tim Deibler

Tim Deibler has had a life-long passion for art. From his earliest childhood he tried to visually depict the world around him with crayons and paint. After studying with many of the local artists during high school, he chose to go to the Art Institute of Colorado. After graduating in 1979 he worked in the commercial art and video production fields until going full time as a fine artist in 1992.

He has won five Awards of Excellence at the Oil Painters of America's National Juried Show from such distinguished artists as Daniel Gerhartz, Peter Adams, Quang Ho, Ramon Kelly and Scott Christensen. Best known for his stunning portrayal of nature in oil, he loves painting the rugged mountain peaks, desert canyons and the pounding surf.

With the success of his book Capturing the Seasons in Oils published by North Light Books he has become a popular teacher and workshop instructor. His work has appeared in many books and publications including: Art From the Parks, North Light Books Painter's Quick Reference Landscapes, North Light Books Landscapes of Colorado, Fresco Fine Art Publications.

He was featured in the February 2012 Southwest Art article Of This Earth. Additional articles include: Plein Air Magazine: December 2005, Southwest Art: August 1998, April 1999, October 1999, October 2002, March 2003,and August 2008.

Born and raised in Oklahoma, Deibler's passion for landscapes, mountains in particular began after seeing the 1956 movie The Mountain as a young boy. His aspiration to be a landscape painter started at age 13 after receiving a copy of the 19th-century mountain climber Edward Whympers' book Scrambles Amongst the Alps. When opportunity allowed, Deibler moved his family to southern Colorado in 1999 where the mountains became his constant inspiration. "Every time I look out the window or walk outside I'm in the mountains, making it much easier for me to observe the constant moods and nuances of nature. My goal is to portray what I'm experiencing in nature, I want the viewer of my work to say "I'd like to be there."
