Reclaimed: The Art of Recology

Since 1990, over 150 professional artists and 50 student artists have completed residencies, making art from scavenged materials. By offering this rare opportunity to make artwork with materials retrieved from the dump, Recology hopes to empower communities to conserve natural resources. Additionally, the Artist in Residence program is driven by a mission to amplify the voices of systematically marginalized populations, offer a community space for learning, and host a public education program that inspires children and adults to reimagine their role in creating a just and sustainable world.

From innovative furniture design, paper making, and performance art to quilting, animation, sculpture work, and more, it is evident that Recology is as rich in discarded objects as it is in exquisitely diverse artworks. By showcasing the rich potential of rejected material, this exhibition seeks to spark dialogues about ways to support and protect the environment. In a time when the signs of climate change have never been so evident, the importance of bringing ecological issues to the forefront cannot be understated. Instead of doomsday warnings, this Recology exhibition takes the approach that art is an incredible force in changing hearts and minds. Through this collaborative effort, Recology and Bedford Gallery hope that this exhibition will inspire viewers to rethink their consumption habits and take steps towards creating a more sustainable world.
