The Handweavers Guild of Pueblo
October 4, 2024 - November 23, 2024
1st Floor Hoag Gallery
A Snapshot of the Handweavers Guild of Pueblo at 50 years The Handweavers Guild of Pueblo was officially organized in the fall of 1974 largely due to interest in Shirley Barr’s weaving classes at what is now CSU-Pueblo. Further promoting interest, classes in weaving and fiber arts were taught at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center. An original roster listed 17 members, many of whom are still Guild members. From its inception, the purpose of the Guild has been to promote and encourage weaving, spinning and related fiber arts. Members developed programs and staged yearly exhibits at a variety of locations and events. Most recently, demonstrations have occurred at the Colorado State Fair, PCC Fremont Campus, The El Pueblo Museum and regional schools. Handweavers Guild of Pueblo members have hosted and participated in both juried and nonjuried shows. Also, it annually funds weaving awards in the Fine Arts and Creative Arts divisions at the Colorado State Fair. Members’ creations are available for sale to the public at the Handwoven Holiday Sale held each year in early November. The Guild meets monthly, typically skipping a month or two in the summer. A business meeting precedes a time for socializing with fellow enthusiast, sharing weaving projects and problems, and hearing from a guest speaker. Throughout the year, guild members can participate in a variety of study groups, programs and workshops. Opportunities to learn and hone new skills are available through an extensive Guild Library and rental equipment is offered. Several members offer mentoring and instruction. A monthly newsletter keeps members informed of local and regional activities and opportunities to learn.
