Beauty Reborn 2.0

Salvador Dalí Alice in Wonderland Series Private Collection

June 7 to June 14 | White Gallery

Salvador Dalí was born on May 11, 1904 in Spain. From what we know about his early life he was always rebelling against any constraints laid upon him. He rebelled against his father’s career choice for him. Behavioral and cultural norms were tossed aside on whatever whim grabbed him, even to the point of offending some folks. He broke all the rules given to him in art, even telling his teachers they had no right to judge him or his work. When he discovered the Surrealists, it seemed he had found his home in the art world, helping to popularize the movement. However, he was too much even for them and was kicked out.

Gala was the great love of his life and inspired many of his works. She became his business manager because Dalí had no interest in money. He was shattered when Gala died but friends took care of him until his death in 1989 at the age of 84.

Dalí’s work has become synonymous with the Surrealist movement and in the modern world his moustache has even become an icon. The Persistence of Memory (1931), the melting clocks, has been emblazoned on everything from t-shirts to ties. Along with his constant production of visual arts, Dalí participated in all kinds of projects from furniture design and game shows to magazine articles and art “happenings”. Dalí is a part of the fabric of the modern world, and we are proud to host this collection of his work at the Sangre de Cristo from June 7 to June 14 in the White Galleries.
