Job Description – Executive Director

The Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center (Arts Center) seeks a bold thinker and a risk taker with entrepreneurial skills and a willingness to be a visible ambassador for the Arts Center.  In sum, the new executive director of the Arts Center will be cognizant of the history of the Arts Center and its relationship with the state of Colorado, as well as the City and County governments of Pueblo, Colorado.  At the same time, the new director will have the capacity of bringing new vision and passion for the arts to the Arts Center.  The director will lead the staff of the agency and facilitate board and community efforts to establish the arts as an integrated element of our diverse and culturally rich community.  The new director must be willing to establish his or her commitment to the community in part by relocating to the County of Pueblo. 

 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

A Bachelor’s degree or demonstrated equivalent experience. Degrees in arts-related disciplines/or equivalent related experience is preferred. Master’s degree encouraged.

 

Experience at an Arts Center or other cultural institution at a leadership level with a proven track record in areas such as: fundraising, administration, collections management, exhibition and program development is strongly recommended.

 

Proven experience in substantial and ongoing fundraising which includes expertise in recognition and stewardship of donors.

 

Sound financial planning ability including not-for-profit financial management.

 

Exceptional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; demonstrated achievement in team building; effective and articulate in advocating for the arts to diverse constituents.

 

Proven ability to attract, motivate, and lead a talented staff (preferably of 10 or more people).

 

Excellent computer skills, including the ability to work efficiently with technology.

 

Commitment to live in Pueblo County and to relocate in a timely manner.

Proficiency with technology. 

 

Responsibilities

These responsibilities are not intended to be all-inclusive. The Director will also perform other reasonably related Arts Center duties as assigned.

 

Recruiting, hiring and firing, and daily supervision of all full and part-time staff and volunteers.

 

Financial management, including developing an annual budget and ensuring that income, expenses, and overhead operations are held within expected guidelines.

 

Fund-raising, including raising sufficient annual operating funds; working with the staff to develop and implement capital and endowment campaigns; membership recruitment campaign; identifying foundation and governmental funding sources and writing grants; working with the staff to develop a corporate solicitation strategy and supervising the implementation of that strategy. 

 

Oversee the development of vibrant arts and educational exhibits and programs, implementation, and evaluation including budgets for each program. Oversee community outreach programs and classes for adults and children as well as all special events. 

 

Oversee the organization’s public image including approval of all printed material relating to the Arts Center - from supervising the writing and design of membership brochures, newsletters, advertisements and any other marketing materials, and including oversight of the webpage and all other electronic media.

 

Promote the Art Center’s purpose and programs in the community and surrounding areas through public appearances.

 

Represent the Arts Center at national and regional conferences or other events. Serve as the chief spokesperson and press liaison for the Arts Center.

 

Identify diverse community needs and work with the staff and Board in the development of annual and long-range plans of action, including determination of goals and methods for evaluating progress.

 

Work with volunteers to ensure that they understand their roles at the organization, are informed of information pertaining to the Arts Center and that they receive the proper acknowledgment and recognition for their efforts.

 

Build constructive, collaborative relationships with Board members, community individuals and organizations, artists, and current and future donors.

 

Act as liaison with the Board, supervise preparation of materials for Board meetings and maintain master Board minute files.

 

To cast a vision for the Arts in a diverse Community.

 

To build relationships and community commitment to the Arts in Pueblo and the region.

 

Compensation

The Board of the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center is offering a competitive salary of $80,000 - $90,000, plus benefits, based upon qualifications and experience. Relocation expenses to be negotiated.

3. Pueblo is a very diverse community. What has been your experience in working with different age groups, ethnic groups, etc? Describe one unique cultural program or experience you have brought to a community.

4. How do you feel the Arts enhance a community? What do you feel the role of an Arts Center should be?

5. Express the value of community partnerships.

About Pueblo

Located at the crossing of U.S. Highway 50 and Interstate 25, Pueblo is an important part of the Front Range Urban Corridor. As one of the largest steel-producing cities in the United States, and located just 45 miles south of Colorado Springs, Pueblo is widely considered to be the economic hub of Southeastern Colorado. At a relatively low elevation of just under 5,000 feet, mild weather and low humidity levels, Pueblo residents enjoy a variety of year-round outdoor recreation options including a new urban kayak course and bike trails. The community is a hub of services as well as cultural activities for the region.
